More Inclusive Emoji Hairstyles Are Coming

Huge news in emoji-land: Soon, more emoji hair colors across the spectrum will finally be repped on keyboards everywhere. According to a proposal spotted by Mashable, emoji creators over at the Unicode Technical Committee are edging towards broadening emoji hair types to curly, red, silver, and bald. The icons may be tiny, but it’s a huge step for representation in all things—and given the reaction to expanded skin tones and gender professions last year, props to the company for continuing to up its commitment to inclusivity.

And it’s apparently a long time coming; the proposal mentions that Unicode has received ongoing requests for redhead representation, but the calls “proved a challenge” thanks to competing implementation options. It’s not entirely clear what that means, but it looks like the company got on top of it—and from the proposal, it sounds like the redhead requests then led the company to tackle the entire “naturally occurring” spectrum. Which means, sad face, that “non-naturally occurring features, such as blue hair, piercings, and tattoos” were specifically omitted 🤔. So everyone dabbling in fun hair colors are stuck with Bowie and Jem for now—but we can’t wait, can’t wait, for a unicorn/mermaid rollout (kidding).

The proposal itself is definitely worth a read for the highly entertaining hair color inspirations alone. Stars like Anderson Cooper inspired the silver fox man, of course, while Sinead O’Connor is listed for bald-woman inspiration—an excellent choice, and one we’re sure Cara Delevingne will get plenty of use from. Jessica Chastain and Ed Sheeran were the standard-bearers for redheads, meaning we’ll forever think of Ed when choosing the little red man.

So, big things to watch out for. Per the proposal, the earliest we’ll be seeing the new emojis roll out will be 2018—a ways away, but definitely worth the wait. Until then, Bitmoji for our daily hair looks will have to do.
