Model Gigi Hadid and pop star Zayn Malik posed together for Vogue‘s August 2017 cover issue and the spread inside and did something particularly refreshing: incorporated pieces from each other’s wardrobes into their looks.
For the photoshoot, shot by fashion photog duo Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin, the pair swapped everything from pants to jackets, and according to the accompanying article, this isn’t out of the ordinary for the couple. “I shop in your closet all the time, don’t I?” Hadid asks Malik, to which he replies, “Yeah, but same.” Gigi explains that for them, an article of clothing like a t-shirt does’t have to come with a gender label attached, saying, “It’s not about gender. It’s about, like, shapes. And what feels good on you that day. And anyway, it’s fun to experiment.” Malik attributes this experimentation to individual identity, hypothesizing that “With social media, the world’s gotten very small, and it can seem like everyone’s doing the same thing. Gender, whatever—you want to make your own statement. You know? You want to feel distinct.”
Of course, unlike in most of our closets, the shapes in question are designer, like Gucci jackets and Ralph Lauren suspenders.
Gigi and Zayn previously appeared together within the magazine’s pages for a couple goals “Italian Vacation” spread shot by Mario Testino.
Both stars took to Instagram to celebrate the cover, with Gigi posting a sweet note that reads:
