At this point, it takes a lot for a new mascara to wiggle its way into my collection. From Walgreens to Sephora, formulas everywhere have upped their game in delivering lust-worthy, long lashes. And no matter how many new arrivals make their way across my desk with big promises and shiny, pretty packaging, only two things stay true. One, Maybelline’s Great Lash is permanently on deck for simple, pretty lashes that look natural but better. The pink and green tube’s not going anywhere, but here’s the second truth: With ol’ faithful in hand, I’m still eternally on the hunt for the most fluttery, dramatic lashes a tube of mascara can give. On that last point, I’ve got good news: The brand that gave us Great Lash is coming out with a new mascara that’s going to change the game. And on top of that, it smells like coconuts.
When makeup artist Grace Lee pulled out Maybelline’s new Total Temptation mascara at Public School’s show this weekend, the gaggle of editors around her were transfixed (in fact, Lee mentioned a few of the beta testers had already disappeared). It’s unlike anything we’ve seen at the drugstore before: The whopper of a brush is Diorshow-level big, which translates to mega-plump, long, and lifted lashes. Lee says that even from her all-knowing POV as a pro makeup artist, it packs “the most product on a brush I’ve ever seen. Literally, it’s almost too much.”
And then there’s the coconut thing. Where mascaras typically smell floral if they go scented, coconut is totally new territory—and the smell comes courtesy of the—rumored to be—coconut oil in the formula. Given that every model and actress swears by massaging coconut oil into their lashes to condition them, Maybelline is making “your lashes but better” an option, makeup or not. A coconut scent is often polarizing (if people hate it, they tend to really hate it), but don’t worry—the scent is subtle and steers clear of piña colada, so I’m predicting it’ll be universally beloved.
With the combination of the huge brush, the nourishing formula, and the fluttery lashes every model ended up with, I hereby name Maybelline’s upcoming release the drugstore Diorshow. Fighting words, but ones I stand by. The only downside? It’ll be a few months before the mascara drops, in January 2018. Until then: Sniff that Glossier Balm Dotcom for your coconut fix.
