The One Question Kristen Bell Asks When She’s Unsure of Herself as a Working Mom

Whether in interviews or on social media, Kristen Bell has no problem sharing the truth behind juggling her career, marriage to Dax Shepard, and parenting their two daughters, Lincoln, 5, and Delta, 3. She’s been forthcoming about everything from battling anal worms to mental health challenges to the fact that, despite seeming like a complete open book 24/7, she’s protective of her private life, too.

It’s apparent that The Good Place actress has a healthy take on life, which was reflected yet again in her recent Instagram story.

On Thursday, July 12, Kristen took to the social media platform to answer fans’ questions. Among them was this heavy-hitter: “How do you know if your [sic] doing things ‘right’? Like person, mom, employee or wife?”

Kristen’s no stranger to feeling that typical working mom pressure to deliver 100% while wearing just about every single hat that she can possibly wear. But she explained that in order to pinpoint whether she’s on track, she checks in with herself by asking one key question: “Does this choice maximize happiness and minimize suffering?”

Sure, it’s a broad question—especially when you’re trying to tend to your own happiness and reduce suffering while doing the same for your children, your employer and your partner. But to come back to that one crucial, foundational analysis—happiness vs. suffering—is most definitely a way to put any situation in perspective and navigate in the “right” direction.

On a similar note, Kristen was also asked: “How do you stay positive and confident?” to which she responded, “I try to participate in esteemable acts. I help people. I try to be kind and walk in the shoes of others. It’s really all selfish because it makes me feel great.”

Too funny, and yet, how truly important. No doubt Kristen has plenty of practice participating in admirable acts and helping people through her philanthropic work. She works with L.A.-based organization Baby 2 Baby, which provides low-income children, ages 0 to 12 years, with diapers, clothing and all the basic necessities that every child deserves, and co-founded the company This Bar Saves Lives, which aims to raise awareness and funds to help fight malnutrition around the world. In turn, she’s not only doing something that bolsters her positivity and confidence but also setting an example for her daughters.

Props to Kristen for proving that we all need to check in with our internal compasses from time to time. Whether you’re striving to be “right” or upbeat as you face the everyday challenges of working mom life, it’s not necessarily going to be easy. But it clearly helps to be able to fall back on certain, big-hearted guiding principles.
