Childless Model Says 'Professional' Moms Don't Let Kids Ever Get in the Way of Work

English model Kelly Brook has people outraged over controversial comments she made about working moms while on national television.

As the Daily Mail reports, Kelly, who has no children, appeared as a guest on the talk show Loose Women on Monday, and revealed the following: "I have a pet hate, and I don't have children so I don't always understand, but I do work with some women that if they can't make an appointment or can't do something, or there is a deadline, some people will always say 'oh, it's because I have to wash the baby' or 'feed the kids" or "I've got to do the school run.'"

Her solution? If you have children, don't mention them at work—at all. "Others have kids and you never even hear about the kids. They are very professional and I love that," she said.

The model also suggested that moms are purposely using the fact that they have a family to get out of doing work. "I just think women shouldn't use kids as an excuse not to do their job properly. I think it's nobody's business. If you can't meet the demands of your job, don't blame your kids."

What's more, she doesn't seem to get why so many moms aren't better at doing the whole work-life balance thing. "I have just been in situations with parents, where they have got to do the school run or something. They know they have to do the school run, they know they have to put the kids to bed, so wouldn't you figure your career out around those things?"

Since her appearance on the show, people have taken to Twitter to voice their thoughts on the model's statements. One user said, "If you need to take time off for your sick kids, you can't meet the demands of the job. That attitude is exactly the problem … flexibleworking."

Another pointed out the model doesn't know what she's talking about since she's not speaking from experience: "Kelly Brook making any kind of comments on working moms/parents is ridiculous … Comments on mom/parents full stop. Why?! Because she doesn't bloody have any!"

One mom, meanwhile, responded by clarifying what she actually does when she has to leave early. "I work so much more efficiently and harder since having kids. Yes, I leave earlier (still later than a lot), but I get more done in the time I’m there in order to do so!"

Kelly obviously has no idea how difficult it is to juggle work and family responsibilities, but she's not the only one. Her views are reflective of larger society's attitude toward working moms as well. There's the unfair assumption that if you have kids, you can't be as dedicated to your job as someone without kids. Yet on the other hand, there's also the assumption that it's somehow easy to "figure out" raising kids and having a career.

To clear things up for you, Kelly and everyone else who doesn't get it: there are plenty of working moms who are dedicated to their careers. And when moms have to leave early or miss work because of their children, they feel downright guilty or embarrassed (rather than feel happy about it), because they know people like YOU are probably silently judging them. Rather than being a treat, missing work or leaving early just means means starting your mom shift much sooner than expected—and working harder later on to catch up with your job tasks.
