An English television host and mom of two is under fire for the way she flies with her kids—her 12 and 10-year-old sons sit in the economy section while she and her husband sit in first class seats when the family goes on vacations.
Kirstie Allsopp, the star of the BBC real estate show Location, Location Location, said in an interview she has been doing this ever since her kids have been old enough to handle being on their own.
“When we fly as a family, the boys do fly separately from Ben and me if we’re not in economy together, she told The Sun. “Obviously this wasn’t the case when they were little but now they are big enough to sit separately, they do.
She explained she does it to save money and to prevent her kids from getting spoiled by the luxury.
“Club Class should be a huge treat you’ve worked hard for,” she said. “If kids get used to it, what do they have to work towards? It seems like an absurd waste of money and very spoiling.”
Despite this perfectly reasonable explanation and the fact that her kids are old enough to handle sitting separately, Kirstie still drew plenty of ire online.
She went on to tweet that she simply has a different parenting style than others.
She also mentioned sometimes her teenage stepchildren are also in coach and keep an eye on the two younger kids. And more often than not, she is sitting with them as well.
Some people still disagreed with Kirstie and suggested parents should try to spend as much time as possible with their kids on a trip.
A former flight attendant also chimed in and mentioned this arrangement was often inconvenient for the crew.
However, as some mentioned, her kids are likely old enough to entertain and clean up after themselves.
And others joked they would take it a step further.
Kirstie’s methods probably wouldn’t work if her kids were younger, but since they aren’t, it’s hard to see what the big deal is. She and her husband get a little extra time for relaxation early on the trip. And if the kids really do need her, she’s only a short trip up the aisle away. It’s not like they are on a completely different plane.
As anyone who has traveled with kids could tell you, family vacations can sometimes be more work than going to your actual job. So let this mom enjoy the first class seats she has worked hard to pay for. The family will spend plenty of time together for the rest of the vacation.
