The Royal Wedding Pageboys Are Giving Us Goth Wedding Style

You may have heard that this Saturday, Meghan Markle, Suits star and feminist activist, married a man named Henry Charles Albert David and became the Duchess of Sussex. Following rampant and mostly incorrect speculation about what she would be wearing, Markle made the surprising, brilliant choice of a simple Givenchy gown, designed by the brand’s artistic director, Englishwoman Clare Waight Keller. Its simplicity avoided the frothiness and drama often associated with royal wedding dress, allowing the emphasis to lie instead, appropriately, on the two people getting married.

This morning, Kensington Palace released three official photographs of the wedding shot by Alexi Lubomirski, also a prince. (Lubomirski produced the couple’s engagement portraits last December.) The photographs a include group portrait with the royal family: the queen and Prince Phillip; Camilla and Charles; Prince William and Kate Middleton; and Markle’s very cool mom Doria Ragland. Everyone is wearing green, black, or white—other than Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, who, in a reverse Mean Girls, is solo in pink.

There’s also a black-and-white portrait of the couple, as well as another group portrait of Harry, Meghan, and the pint-sized bridesmaids and pageboys. We’re familiar with royal weddings setting trends for bridal design: the shockwaves of Princess Diana’s puff-sleeved dress were felt throughout the 1980s, and lace sleeves had a moment following Kate Middleton’s 2011 Alexander McQueen gown. One especially compelling thing here, though, are the very goth vibes of the pageboys’ all-black suits, which are heightened by sombre expressions and middle-parted hair (the official part style of gothdom). If you, like me, have always found the cute breeziness of wedding style difficult to pull off, now, your problem is solved.
