Jimmy Fallon Surprises Parkland Survivors with Graduation Speech

Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School’s class of ’18 got a big surprise at their graduation ceremony on Sunday: Jimmy Fallon. The Tonight Show host surprised the students and their families gathered at the BB&T Center in Florida. Fallon delivered a commencement speech that brought laughter and inspiration to the students, the survivors of a tragic school shooting in February that took the lives of 17 people including four seniors.

“You won’t be classmates anymore. You’ll be adults who Facebook search each other at two in the morning for the next 10 years,” joked Fallon. He also commended the student body whose action following the tragedy sparked a nationwide conversation about gun control as well as marches and rallies all over the country. “The first thing is this: when something feels hard, remember that it gets better,” said Fallon. “Choose to move forward. Don’t let anything stop you.”

The families of the four seniors who were killed–Nicholas Dworet, Joaquin Oliver, Carmen Schentrup, and Meadow Pollack–accepted their diplomas on their behalf.
