A Mom’s Viral Discovery Will Change the Way You Brush Your Kid’s Teeth

When it comes to brushing a toddler’s teeth, parents will tell you they are lucky to get any toothpaste at all on their child’s pearly whites. However, it turns out that there is a recommended amount of paste and the secret to nailing that perfect squeeze has been staring us in the face the whole time.

A Facebook post from Little Learners Southport, an English daycare center, has gone viral after pointing out that the colors on a kids toothbrush are meant to show parents the correct amount of toothpaste to use.

“Tell me I am NOT the only one who didn't know that the coloured bristles on children's toothbrushes are ‘toothpaste indicators’ that tell you where to put it and how much toothpaste to use!? I have totes been using too much,” wrote Holly, a mom and the owner of the center.

The post also included two different brushes to show how the size of the colored bristles changes as kids age.

While this may seem obvious, plenty of people had no clue that the brightly-hued bristles serve a purpose other than making brushes more colorful and kid-friendly. (We had no idea.) The post has been shared almost 5,000 times and has received thousands of comments from flabbergasted parents.

In an interview with Babble, Holly explained she decided to share the tip after stumbling upon it on a new set of toothbrushes.

“I felt daft initially not knowing about it, and then thought I’d share my new fact on my Little Learners Facebook page as I thought it would amuse some of the other parents,” she said.

After trying it out on her daughter, she found that using the proper amount of toothpaste actually works.

“It’s definitely changed the amount of toothpaste I put on and actually that has made it easier to brush my little girl’s teeth,” she said. “Perhaps she just hated the taste because I was putting a bit too much on!”

It’s probably not that big of a deal if you were completely unaware of it, but this new trick may make for a more efficient brushing session. Now if only there was a way to make them stand still for two minutes.
