Grandma-to-Be Gets Booted from Daughter’s Delivery Room, But Has the Perfect Reaction

The birth of a child is a very intimate experience. Family members, specifically grandparents, often opt for a front-row seat to see the infant enter the world. But giving birth is painful. It can be stressful. And without a doubt, it is personal.

Reddit user Martella71, an eager grandma-to-be, pledged she would do anything to ensure her daughter had a smooth birth. This included leaving the delivery room upon the request of the mom-to-be.

"My daughter kicked me out of the delivery room . . . as was her right, and I fully support her in her decision to do so,” Martella71 wrote.

She detailed her daughter’s labor and her delivery-room experience in a post that has been praised in more than 200 comments.

The mom explained that the plan was to accompany her daughter to the hospital in the event that her husband was still at his job.

“She’s been in labor with her first child since yesterday evening,” explained Martella71. “I drove her to the hospital because her husband, my son-in-law, was working an overnight shift. The plan was always to do that if she went into labor while he was gone, and she asked me many months ago if I would be in the delivery room with her. I said yes.”

Her daughter’s husband arrived around midnight. Although she was more than happy to be helpful at the hospital, she sensed a shift in her daughter’s needs. She realized that privacy is paramount.

“I asked if she wanted me to go, and give them some privacy. She breathed an audible sigh of relief and said ‘yes,’ and when she started to apologize, I told her not to,” the devoted mother wrote. “I gave both her and my son-in-law a hug, and went home to sleep. In the morning I saw a text from her that she was still in labor, so I went over to her house to feed her dogs and let them out.”

The grandma-to-be spent the rest of her day preparing for the things her daughter and son-in-law did not have time to accomplish.

“I’ve been here cleaning and preparing freezer meals since then, and when I’m done I’ll clean up the kitchen, feed the dogs again and be on my way,” she said. “When my grandchild is born, they’ll let me know. I’ll only come to the hospital if they ask."

She attributed her accommodating attitude to a Google search that revealed many stories of overbearing grandmothers, which she did not want to be.

Martella71 updated her post with the details on her new grandchild. Her daughter gave birth to a baby girl after almost 24 hours of labor.

“She’s a boss! I’m just all shook up,” the proud grandma shared.
