When Anne Hathaway Needed to Pump on Set, Her ‘Ocean’s 8’ Costars Did What All Colleagues Should

The new film Ocean's 8 focuses on a group of women who team up to perform a major jewelry heist. According to a recent interview, the all-female, star-studded cast teamed up behind-the-scenes as well, and were super understanding of one actress's need to perform a motherly duty on set.

Anne Hathaway, who had given birth to son Jonathan in 2016, was still breastfeeding when the movie began shooting—her first movie since having a baby—so she had to maintain a pumping schedule at work. However, she had no idea how her costars, including Sandra Bullock, Cate Blanchett, Mindy Kaling, Sarah Paulson, Rihanna, Helena Bonham Carter and Awkwafina, would react to her having to pump on set. (After all, moms are still shamed these days for breastfeeding in public, from both men and women). But during an appearance on the TODAY show, Anne revealed that the other female leads were "fantastic," This Is Insider reports.

"I had that moment where I was like, 'Oh, is this going to be a positive environment to be able to do that in?'" the actress said. "I remember there was one moment where we were shooting a little long, and I just kind of went [groans], and the girls were like 'What's wrong?' And I said, 'I'm sorry, I should have pumped an hour ago.' And the girls just like formed around me, and they were like, 'We need a break. We need a break. Annie needs to go do this.' And it was just like, I mean, who gets that? Everybody should."

It must help that Sandra, Cate, Helena and Mindy are moms as well.

Not only that, her castmates made her feel better about her post-baby weight. In an interview with Ellen, she said that after having her son, her post-baby weight was slow to come off and she was a different size than she normally was. But when she arrived on set wearing jeans and feeling self-conscious, her costars boosted her confidence. "Sandy Bullock looks up and goes, ‘Looking good, mama!’ Cate Blanchett’s like, ‘Nice jeans, Hathaway!’” she said. Anne even got a compliment from Rihanna. "Rihanna looks up and goes, ‘Damn, girl, you got an ass!’ And I, of course, freaked out and loved it so much. I was like, ‘Really?!’ And she goes, ‘You got an ass like me!’”

Sandra also confirmed how well the cast worked together, telling People magazine, “I saw a group of women support each other in the most humbling way. Everyone wanting the other to ‘have their moment.’ Early on in the shoot we started reading stories that we were at each other’s throats, but the opposite was true. A lot of film was wasted on laughing fits that usually resulted in makeup having to be redone and a little snot being removed.”

Considering that the stereotype that women are catty with each other still exists, it's always nice to hear that there are, indeed, plenty of ladies who are lifting each other up, and that our favorite female celebs are BFF material.
