Ex-Google Exec Powerfully Vindicates Working Mom Who Thinks She’s ‘Too into Her Kids’

When you work 40+ hours a week and have a little one or two, there isn't much time left for hobbies. Even if there were, pouring your soul into helping your children blossom into productive grown-ups might be your pastime of choice. Among professionals, though, there's still a stigma around being passionate about parenting. You might not freely discuss your kids' achievements at the office, and you might limit your desk decorations to a single family photo.

Chloé Koos, the head of HR analytics at financial-services company Pictet Group, was at an industry gathering and listening to a panel of field experts. They were sharing their various passions, which ranged from music and arts to being a clown doctor in a hospital. That's when Chloé realized her passion: her kids. In a LinkedIn post, she shared:

She was feeling incredibly "ordinary" when Laszlo Bock, the former SVP of People Operations at Google, empowered her when he admitted his passion: his kids. Those two words filled Chloé with gratitude and reminded her that it's more than OK to care more about your children than your job.

"Thank you Laszlo Bock for helping us show that one can be an influential leader 'despite' having our kids as first and foremost passion. That day you made me feel proud of being an invested, hard-working mom who nevertheless loves her kids more than her work."

Her note caught the attention of hundreds of like-minded moms, and at least one dad: Laszlo, himself, who commented on her post.

The pressure to be a good mom and hide it at the benefit of being an even better business woman.

So here I am sitting at this huge IT fair listening to a panel enumerating their passions: music, arts, sports, clown doctor in hospitals. I turn around to my friend and share my feeling of being ordinary—“I would have said: my kids.”

After all, nothing in my life has given me such shivers than watching their neural network grow and experiencing the intensity of the emotions transmitted by a simple “I love you mommy”.

Yet, here I am sitting at this fair next to this non-father consultant who can sacrifice 18 hours of his day to his career, feeling like a desperate working mom, probably “too much into my kids” to have a “meaningful” career one day.

Then, fortunately for my self-esteem, the conference ends with Laszlo Bock, Google’s former HR Director. At the end of his awesomely inspiring speech, he’s being asked what his passion is. He answers “my kids.”

Thank you Laszlo Bock for helping us show that one can be an influential leader “despite” having our kids as first and foremost passion. That day you made me feel proud of being an invested, hard-working mom who nevertheless loves her kids more than her work.
