1 dead, 1 critically wounded after gunfire erupts at Upland party

The driver of a vehicle that fled after gunfire erupted during a party in Upland died nearby, and two pedestrians also were shot — one of them critically wounded — following a fight at the gathering that some described as a baby shower, police said Sunday.

No suspect has been identified.

Police were called Saturday to the 1500 block of North Shelley Avenue in the city shortly before midnight on the report of several gunshots following a fight, the department said in a news release.

A vehicle fled and was found crashed nearby, with the driver dead at the scene. A passenger suffered a head injury. Two pedestrians were also struck by gunfire, one of them in critical condition and the other with non-life threatening wounds, the news release said.

All of the victims were men between the ages of 18 and 22 the release said. None were identified.

Upland Police Sgt. Bill Chani cautioned Sunday morning that detectives were still investigating the incident, but had heard that some witnesses described the gathering as a baby shower.

Police ask anyone with information about the incident to contact them at 909-946-7624, ext.3237.
