Tijuana’s Youth Are Responding To The US-Mexico Border crisis

On February 15, US President Donald Trump declared a national emergency to bypass Congress and free up billions for a border wall between the US and Mexico. The alleged national emergency? A migrant caravan of several thousand people that arrived at the border fleeing violence in Central America. Since the caravan’s arrival in October 2018, Tijuana has been the site of protests and riots. Border police fired tear gas at migrants trying to rush the border, and the streets have become a hotbed for disease. However, the notorious cultural funnel between North and South America is also home to a generation of young people ready and willing to do whatever it takes to help in what has been dubbed “a humanitarian crisis” by the city’s mayor. i-D travelled to Tijuana in December 2018 to report on the situation first-hand. The result was i-D’s latest documentary Tijuana: A Mexican Dream, which you can watch here.
