Man convicted of murder in Riverside County now suspected of slaying cellmate

A man imprisoned after being convicted of murder in Riverside County in 2012 is now suspected of killing his cellmate in a Northern California prison.

James Wing Fung was found standing over Paul A. Diaz on April 30 when officers found Diaz injured and unconscious in his cell at Pelican Bay State Prison in Crescent City, the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation said. Diaz died May 12 in a hospital.

Fung was placed in a segregation unit after Diaz was injured.

Fung was admitted to the prison in 2013 to serve a sentence of 36 years to life for the 2008 stabbing of Ryan Armstrong, 22, outside the ET Sports Lounge on Jefferson Avenue in Temecula. Armstrong was the son of Ron Armstrong, the founding pastor of Cornerstone Community Church in Wildomar.

Matthew Alexis Basler and Marvin Justin Black were also convicted of murder. All three were convicted of assault of two of Armstrong’s friends.

Diaz was serving a life sentence for a conviction of first-degree murder in Los Angeles County. He was imprisoned in 1991.
